GET EDUCATED! | design tips for beginners

What comes to mind when you think of interior design? If you’re like me and you are a beginner in this field, then it can be quite intimidating. After being around our designers at JMI, I am learning so much! There are many aspects of design such as coordinating colors & patterns, lighting, furniture placement, accessorizing and working with a designated space. This may seem like a lot of if you are a beginner but I promise it doesn't have to be complicated! Try following these three basic guidelines with your own space.

First things first! Create an inspiration board of everything that inspires you by cutting out pictures from magazines or utilizing the "online cork board" known as Pinterest!

Second, choose a color scheme and make it simple by sticking with three colors. Take into consideration where you need to add color and whether or not patterns will be used.

Last, but not least, trim down your furniture and accessories to only what inspires you. Editing is an artform, and there is nothing worse than unnecessary clutter.

Have a wonderful week!

GET EDUCATED | small space tips & tricks

Do you have a small room in your home that could use a pick-me-up? What if I told you that through decorating and design, it is possible to make a small space feel bigger?

For example: if you are working with a large room, your options will be greater as large rooms can handle patterns and textures at the same time.  Smaller rooms however, are not able to handle patterns and textures at the same time as the scope for your expression is much less.  This isn’t to say that small rooms have to be boring; they simply require more planning and consideration. A small space will generally function better on the principle of shades and tones that originate from the same color palette.

These photos provide you with a better understanding of how to get the most out of a small room...

Choose a neat upholstered chair with leggy pieces and skirted bottoms - it allows you to see through to the walls and floors

Install a floating shelf - increases bedside square footage

Oversized windows and skylights - invites in the sunshine

Paint walls a solid color while tying in accents of the same color - white furnishings & accessories open and brighten the room

Keep walls, linens and furniture white while adding a small pop of color - this makes a space appear bigger and feel airier

Group furniture in a windowed corner - helps define a discrete living space

Now that I have helped educate you on decorating small spaces, take on a weekend project to reinvent your own small space. You never know, it might just change your life J

Have a great week!
