Happy Friday Everyone!

Natural beauty cannot be replaced. Simple, yet bold, natural materials bring warmth to any room. Natural elements come in all shapes and forms, below you will find a few of my favorite pieces. Even better, all of these are available through JMI.

Regina Andrew does a great job of creating contemporary pieces using natural elements. This mother of pearl lamp is a great example.

DESIGNER PROFILE | barry dixon

mallory smith, barry dixon, jessica mcintyre, beth mccauley

Last week our team was invited to join Arteriors Home and Barry Dixon for a design event and book signing.  Before attending, I didn't know much about Mr. Dixon... what a shame!  Not only is he an uber-talented interior designer, but he has designed product lines for some incredible labels.  In addition to all of that - the man requires nearly no sleep.  He runs on about 3 hours per night... MY HERO.  Seriously.  Just imagine what you could accomplish!!!

During the event Barry spoke of his design philosophy and it was SO REFRESHING to hear him say that design is about the CLIENT, not the designer.  I share the belief that good design isn't accomplished by pushing your style or "brand" onto a client.  Good design is accomplished by working with a client to enhance their environment, and create a space that reflects the person they are and the way that they live.

Couldn't. Agree. More.

Barry's book is a wonderful addition to any library - order yourself one & get inspired!

Here are some of my favorite Barry Dixon spaces...

love the gray and pink combination, especially the artwork

beautiful windows & drapery treatment,
interesting chandelier installation (wonder if it raises and lowers!?)

one thing i love about barry's designs, is that i actually recognize product!

DESIGN | catching some zzzz's

Why do we make our beds one of the busiest, fussiest places in our home?

Exhibit A:

It's time to rethink how we make our beds. Beds are great places to express personality and have fun with fabrics, but they do not need to be tricked out with fringe, flange, and patterns galore.

How do you dress a bed that looks peaceful? At JMI we like to simplify beds by choosing neutral colors and one pop of color or fun pattern. A simple coverlet, beautiful duvet, a few Euro pillows, and an accent pillow or two are a great combo.

Personally, I like all white bedding and one or two accent pillows with color. I have a white cotton coverlet that has looked good for seven years. I have a rouched white duvet, white Euro pillows, white standard pillows, and one beautiful velvet long pillow in front that adds color.

Here are some beds that I would love to sleep in:

There are plenty of interesting elements in this room -
the wall color, window treatments, lamps, furniture, light fixture, etc.
The bed is beautiful, simple, and somewhere I could rest.

Calming, relaxing, beautiful - everything I want in a bed.

Warm and cozy. Handsome and interesting.

Lots of personality, but simple.

Make a beautiful bed, and get some rest!

GET EDUCATED | small space tips & tricks

Do you have a small room in your home that could use a pick-me-up? What if I told you that through decorating and design, it is possible to make a small space feel bigger?

For example: if you are working with a large room, your options will be greater as large rooms can handle patterns and textures at the same time.  Smaller rooms however, are not able to handle patterns and textures at the same time as the scope for your expression is much less.  This isn’t to say that small rooms have to be boring; they simply require more planning and consideration. A small space will generally function better on the principle of shades and tones that originate from the same color palette.

These photos provide you with a better understanding of how to get the most out of a small room...

Choose a neat upholstered chair with leggy pieces and skirted bottoms - it allows you to see through to the walls and floors

Install a floating shelf - increases bedside square footage

Oversized windows and skylights - invites in the sunshine

Paint walls a solid color while tying in accents of the same color - white furnishings & accessories open and brighten the room

Keep walls, linens and furniture white while adding a small pop of color - this makes a space appear bigger and feel airier

Group furniture in a windowed corner - helps define a discrete living space

Now that I have helped educate you on decorating small spaces, take on a weekend project to reinvent your own small space. You never know, it might just change your life J

Have a great week!
